How You Can Help
Thangka painting is a century old
Tibetan tradition which is in danger of being lost. The next generation
of Tibetan Thangka painters will be the last direct link to the heritage
of Tibetan art. Thangde Gatsal Studio aims to preserve this unique art
form by training a new generation of painters and by bringing thangka
art to a wider audience. To do this, we need your help.
1. Become a Founding Member
Founding members of the school have played
a vital role in seeing the dreams of Thangde Gatsal realized and will
continue to be essential to the success of this organization. Interested
parties are encouraged to become founding members by choosing to make
a tax deductible donation from one of the various Levels of Donation:
- Leopard Donation - $100 to $ 500
Yearly thank-you letter, newsletter, and special calendar
- Snow
Lion Donation -$501 to $1000
All Leopard benefits in addition to 10% off Thangka commissions
- Wind
Horse Donation -$1,001 to $5000
All Snow Lion benefits in addition to donor’s name
appearing on placard inside the building to which their donation contributed
- Dragon
Donation -$5,001 to $10,000
All Wind Horse benefits in addition to donor’s name appearing
on placard inside the building to which their donation contributed
Donations by founding members in the past have allowed for the completion
in December 2007 of construction on a new gallery and office. It is hoped
that the construction of a student accommodations
building and other
ongoing projects will be completed through continued support of this
kind. The student accommodations are essential for the realization of
Thangde Gatsal’s mission, as it will enable students to fully dedicate
themselves to studying the art of traditional Tibetan Thangka painting
in a quiet and collaborative environment.

3. Commission a Thangka
Commissioning a thangka is an indispensable part
of life in Tibetan culture but this tradition is in danger of being lost.
Commissions are paintings created for individuals supporting the studio.
The act of commissioning a thangka brings merit both to the artist and
to the eventual owner. Each painting is custom made and crafted by both
the students and masters.
Interested parties may commission a painting
by Thangde Gatsal, which will be custom made and crafted by the students
and masters. Commissioning a work not only allows one to gain a beautiful
piece of this art form, but also provides artists the opportunity to
practice and improve their craft; thereby preserving this endangered
art form. The price of a commissioned work covers the cost of materials
to produce the piece and provides a stipend to cover the cost of living
for the artist while crafting the commission. Payments are assessed in
Indian rupees (INR) and are divided into two equal installments: one
due at the time of commission and one upon receiving the completed piece.
As styles, prices, and waiting periods for commissions
vary, please contact us.
